Stuart Tyner, PhD, COL (Ret.)

Colonel (Retired) Stuart Tyner, Ph.D., is a distinguished scientist and leader in the field of infectious diseases research and military medicine. With a rich background in both academia and military service, Dr. Tyner brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his role as a member of our Scientific Advisory Board.

Throughout his 22-year military career, Dr. Tyner served in various leadership positions, including Director of the Defense Health Agency Infectious Diseases Portfolio and Director of the Military Infectious Diseases Research Program. He also served as Chief Science Officer at the US Army Institute of Surgical Research and the Chief of Staff at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. During his military career, Dr. Tyner held key roles at all levels of leadership in microbiology and infectious diseases research across different military institutions, both overseas and in the U.S. In culmination of his service, Dr. Tyner was appointed as the lead policy advisor to the U.S. Army Surgeon General in microbiology.

Dr. Tyner previously served as the Department of Defense’s Ex Officio Member of the NIAID Steering Committee and led the Infectious Diseases Portfolio for the Department of Defense’s Biomedical Community of Interest. Dr. Tyner holds an active faculty appointment at USUHS. In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Tyner is actively engaged in academic and professional activities, serving on multiple editorial boards. Dr. Tyner’s contributions in the military have been recognized with numerous awards and honors, including the Legion of Merit and the Order of Military Medical Merit.

Dr. Tyner holds two undergraduate degrees from the University of Notre Dame and a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from Baylor College of Medicine. He was a National Cancer Institute Fellow at the National Institutes of Health and completed a Master’s in Strategic Studies at the U.S. Army Senior Service College (Army War College).
