Kenneth Cameron Awarded Researcher of the Year

Geneva’s Researcher of the Year award is presented annually by Geneva’s Scientific Advisory Board to a researcher who exemplifies Geneva’s mission of advancing innovative medical research within the U.S. military, for the benefit of U.S. service members and veterans, their families, and the global community.

Kenneth Cameron, PhD, MPH, ATC has been named The Geneva Foundation’s 2020 Researcher of the Year. Dr. Cameron’s research partnership with Geneva spans 13 years in which time he has made a substantial impact through his primary research interests in the areas of injury prevention, musculoskeletal injury and disease epidemiology, and outcomes associated with the treatment of these injuries, specifically in physically active and military populations. He also has specific research interests in knee and ankle injuries, shoulder instability, biomarkers associated with post-traumatic osteoarthritis, and sports-related concussion. Dr. Cameron’s research has been relevant and responsive to the healthcare needs of cadets, active duty military service members and veterans, and civilian populations.

For the last 15 years, Dr. Cameron has served as the Director of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Research at Keller Army Community Hospital (KACH) located at the United States Military Academy at West Point where he also holds faculty appointments within the John A. Feagin Jr. Sports Medicine Fellowship and the Baylor University-Keller Army Community Hospital Division 1 Sports Physical Therapy Fellowship. In addition, Dr. Cameron holds faculty appointments at the rank of Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Surgery at the Uniformed Services University.

Dr. Cameron is currently the site principal investigator/co-investigator for the NCAA-DoD Concussion Assessment, Research and Education (CARE) Consortium and the Service Academy Longitudinal mTBI (mild traumatic brain injury) Outcomes Study (SALTOS) at West Point, which aims to understand the effects of concussion and repetitive head impact from sports participation and military training. In this capacity, he has led research efforts within the Clinical Research Core, Advanced Research Core, and Mind Matters Grand Challenge arms of the CARE Consortium’s work.

Dr. Cameron is also leading two projects within Geneva’s Musculoskeletal Injury Rehabilitation Research for Operational Readiness (MIRROR) program which advances the treatment and preventive care for service members with non-combat related musculoskeletal injuries. These projects are focused on the impact of shoulder instability events on glenoid bone loss and the efficacy of behavioral health interventions to preserve joint health and mitigate the impact of post-traumatic osteoarthritis following knee joint injury. He was instrumental in the formation of the MIRROR program, serving as one of the initial investigators and has been active in pursuing opportunities to support the continued growth and sustainability of MIRROR.

In addition to his contributions to medical science, Dr. Cameron was nationally recognized as the United States Sports Academy’s 2017 Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award recipient and he has been recognized with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award. Dr. Cameron has authored or co-authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, in addition to a number of book chapters and edited reviews, and has presented his work at scientific meetings nationally and internationally.
