MIRROR Rehabilitative Medical Research Spotlighted at Inaugural Fort Belvoir Community Hospital Research Symposium
The Fort Belvoir Community Hospital (FBCH) Department of Research Programs hosted the Inaugural Research Symposium on 19 May 2022 and Geneva’s impact on advancing rehabilitative medicine for U.S. service members was highlighted during the program.
Michelle Johnson, PhD, Chief, FBCH Department of Research Programs, invited Geneva team members from the Musculoskeletal Injury Rehabilitation Research for Operational Readiness (MIRROR) team to share the impact of MIRROR’s research on service members suffering from musculoskeletal injuries. Clinical Research Coordinator Katie Roberts, MS, ATC and Research Physical Therapist Teonette Velasco, PT, DPT gave a presentation on MIRROR’s mission as well as current and future projects at FBCH.
FBCH is one of 14 military treatment facilities that MIRROR partners with to deliver high-value research, education, training, and infrastructure for over 40 clinically relevant musculoskeletal injury (MSI) studies within the Military Health System. MIRROR supports a broad scope of projects, including epidemiological investigation, investigator-initiated pilots, and prospective randomized multisite clinical trials. Results of these studies generate evidence-based approaches for future clinical practice guidelines as well as educational opportunities for future military and civilian providers.
MIRROR is conducting six studies at FBCH which include studies such as non-surgical treatments for chronic exertional compartment syndrome, the use of adipose tissue to treat meniscal injuries, utilizing platelet-rich plasma for shoulder injuries, and ultrasound studies to establish normative measurements of the quality of rotator cuff musculature.
The date for the next FBCH Research Symposium is 18 May 2023.
