Principal Investigator LTC Matthew Eckert wins mentorship award at Madigan Army Research Day
Dr. Eckert’s residents and CAPT Connor and CAPT Holtestaul win for best podium presentation
Madigan Research Day is a peek into the future of military medicine, integrating graduate medical education and research.
This year, the 23rd annual Col. Pat C. Kelly Madigan Research Day event was hosted virtually by the Department of Clinical Investigation (DCI) at Madigan Army Medical Center (Madigan) from May 18, 2020 to June 1, 2020. Madigan Army Research Day showcases the best of Madigan’s research through podium presentations and posters covering original research and case reports.
Madigan Army Medical Center research and quality improvement projects were highlighted as residents, fellows and staff members presented their findings, and awards were announced after the event. Among the researchers winning awards were Principal Investigator Army Lt. Col. Matthew Eckert, MD who won the Brigadier General George J. Brown Mentor’s Cube Honorary Research Award. Dr. Eckert is the Trauma Director and Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency at Madigan Army Medical Center.
The BG George J. Brown Mentor’s Cube award honors the vital role of the mentor in the process of medical education and research. As this year’s winner, Dr. Eckert was recognized for the leadership he provides to his students as a core of excellence in medical scholarship.
Dr. Eckert is also a recipient of Geneva’s 2019 Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) Small Grant Competition along with Capt. Daniel Lammers, MD for their research proposal titled, “Combatting Ischemia Reperfusion Injury from Traumatic Injury Requiring Occlusion of the Aorta via Adenosine, Lidocaine, and Magnesium (ALM).”Narrated slide presentations were posted in the categories of Preclinical Research, Clinical Research, and Quality Improvement and six presentations were selected for each category as the most outstanding projects. Podium Presentation Award winners from Geneva’s researchers for the Clinical Session included Dr. Eckert’s resident Capt. Jefferey Conner, General Surgery. The winner from the Quality Improvement Session also included Dr. Eckert’s resident Capt. Torbjorg Holtestaul, General Surgery. In addition, resident Capt. Christopher Marenco won best scientific manuscript for his work on pediatric shock predictive scoring.
