Jonas Philanthropies and Geneva Award Two Scholarships to Advance Military Healthcare

Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare and The Geneva Foundation have announced the recipients of a joint scholarship – two doctoral nursing candidates seeking to improve healthcare for veterans and military personnel. This marks the second time since 2016 that the organizations have partnered to award scholarships in support  of their shared causes.

Ph.D. candidates Lisa Perla, MSN, RN, FNP, CNRN, CRRN and CDR Melissa R. Troncoso, MSN, NPC, CHWC – both pursuing doctoral degrees at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD – were selected to each receive this prestigious Jonas-Geneva scholarship. Perla was selected for her studies on the role leadership plays in the VA’s rehabilitation case managers, who work to reintegrate veterans into the community. Troncoso’s research focuses on managing and preventing obesity among military personnel and veterans, an issue that has reached epidemic proportions. According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control, 78 percent of military veterans battle obesity, which is more than twice as high as the U.S. average of 35 percent.

“We are honored to once again partner with The Geneva Foundation to support leaders in the nursing industry who are spearheading some of the greatest healthcare issues facing our military and veterans,” said Brigadier General (Ret.) William T. Bester, RN, MSN, NEA-BC, FAAN, Senior Advisor, Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare. “The Geneva Foundation has made great strides in innovative medical research to improve the lives of soldiers and veterans.” Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare is a focus area of Jonas Philanthropies, an organization that aims to provide the country’s most vulnerable populations with quality healthcare by investing in scalable, impactful solutions. Through its signature Jonas Scholar Program, which has supported more than 1,250 doctoral nursing scholars at 140 universities in all 50 states, the organization helps educate nurse leaders to tackle our nation’s greatest healthcare needs. Perla and Troncoso are among 330 scholars in the Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program – all of whom are at the frontlines of medical, emotional, psychological and rehabilitative care for U.S. veterans.

The Geneva Foundation provides military medical researchers with proposal development and award management services designed to secure funding and foster innovative research of specific relevance to the military community. Taylor, BSN, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of The Geneva Foundation. “Geneva is rooted in a deep history of commitment to nursing researchers, and we are privileged to further this commitment in the pursuit of impactful research affecting the health and well-being of military and veteran populations today.”
