Geneva Announces Changes to Board of Directors

Previous Geneva Vice Chair Neil Vining, MD, MBA is appointed Board Chair. 

 

The Geneva Foundation (Geneva) announces changes to its Board of Directors with several new additions and the appointment of Dr. Neil Vining as Chair. The additions, and appointment of a new Chair, come as several long-serving members retired from the Board of Directors in December 2020. With these changes, Geneva’s Board of Directors now consists of 14 members dedicated to advancing military medicine.

“We are deeply grateful for the exemplary service of outgoing Board Chair Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Frank Scoggins and Board members Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Stephen Lanza, Dr. Cliff Robertson, C.W. Herchold, and David Blanford,” said Geneva President and CEO Elise Huszar. “We look forward to working with our new members to advance Geneva’s mission dedicated to the health and well-being of service members, their families, and the global community.”

The newly appointed Chair of Geneva’s Board of Directors Neil Vining, MD, MBA previously served as Vice Chair of Geneva’s Board of Directors and has been a member of the Board since 2018. Dr. Vining also served on Geneva’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) beginning in 2012, and as the SAB Chair from 2016-2020. Dr. Vining is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in pediatrics and trauma. In his current role as National Medical Director for Surgical Services at TeamHealth, he oversees clinical, operational, and financial aspects of 20+ orthopedic and general surgery hospital-based trauma programs nationwide. Dr. Vining is a former orthopedic trauma surgeon in the U.S. Army.

Jeff Watts joins Geneva’s Board as Treasurer. Mr. Watts is an experienced Board member and advisor for non-profit organizations, with 30+ years of experience in private equity. He is the chairman of RAIN Incubator, a non-profit biotech incubator and research center.

Uzma Alam, PhD, MPH  is a global health professional, researcher, and entrepreneur. Dr. Alam has extensive leadership experience in research, health management, and translating evidence into public health practice and policy. She currently is the Senior Program Officer at Africa Academy of Sciences and resides in Kenya.

Michael Hartwig is the Senior Risk Manager for Deloitte Consulting. Prior to this role, he served in various leadership roles including as CFO, with vast experience in mergers and acquisitions, business valuation, and strategic planning.

Ron Howell is CEO of the Washington Research Foundation, which has provided over $108 million in grants to Washington’s research institutions for the development and commercialization of STEM-based solutions to important areas of public need.

Shelly Mullin, RN, MHA is a former executive at MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, WA where Geneva’s headquarters is based, retiring in 2017 after 32 years. She has served on numerous nursing and healthcare boards and is currently leading a strategic project with Multicare.

Christine Rousseau, PhD brings 20+ years of international experience as a life sciences executive supporting the development of diagnostics, devices, and vaccines. Dr. Rousseau currently serves as the Chief Business Development Officer for the American Society for Microbiology where she supports strategy and partnerships.

Claire Spain-Remy, MD is an obstetrician-gynecologist and past executive with MultiCare Health Systems and completed her residency and internship at Madigan Army Medical Center. At MultiCare, she served in several leadership positions including as Chief Physician Officer. She is also a U.S. Army veteran.
