The Geneva Foundation (Geneva) announces the appointment of COL (Ret) Andrew (Andre) Cap, MD, PhD, and CAPT (Ret) Travis M. Polk, MD, FACS, to its Scientific Advisory Board (SAB). Both bring decades of leadership in direct care for combat wounded service members, military medical research, and trauma systems development that will further strengthen Geneva’s work advancing military medicine and improving survivability for Service members.

Dr. Cap retired from the U.S. Army in 2023 following more than 22 years of service, most recently serving as Director of Research at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research (USAISR) in San Antonio, Texas. In that role, he led more than 300 researchers and directed a $60 million research portfolio focused on trauma care and survivability for injured service members.

Throughout his career, Dr. Cap served as Chief of Blood Research at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research and as Consultant to the U.S. Army Surgeon General for Hematology and Medical Oncology. He also advised the Armed Services Blood Program and the Joint Trauma System and co-chaired the NATO Blood Panel. Dr. Cap currently serves as an attending hematologist at Brooke Army Medical Center, Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and Hematology Consultant to the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority.

Dr. Polk brings extensive experience in trauma surgery, operational medicine, and military-civilian trauma collaboration. A retired U.S. Navy Captain with 28 years of active-duty service, he is currently Professor of Surgery in the Division of General and Trauma Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh and Deputy Director of the Center for Military Medicine Research.

During his naval career, Dr. Polk deployed multiple times both at sea and in Afghanistan and twice served as Chief of Trauma at the NATO Multinational Role 3 hospital in Kandahar. In his final five years of service, he directed the Department of Defense Combat Casualty Care Research Program, overseeing nearly $1 billion in trauma research investments and advancing international collaborations across NATO partners, including the United Kingdom, Israel, and Ukraine.

“We are pleased to welcome Dr. Andrew Cap and Dr. Travis Polk to Geneva’s Scientific Advisory Board,” said COL (Ret) Stuart Tyner, PhD, Chair of Geneva’s Scientific Advisory Board. “Both have been essential to advancing combat casualty care and shaping the research enterprise that supports it. Their leadership across trauma systems, blood science, and large-scale military medical research programs will strengthen the SAB’s ability to guide Geneva’s scientific priorities and ensure our research continues to translate into meaningful improvements in survivability and readiness.”

“The addition of Dr. Cap and Dr. Polk reflects Geneva’s continued commitment to engaging leading experts who understand the operational realities of military medicine,” said Elise Huszar, President and Chief Executive Officer of The Geneva Foundation. “Their expertise will help guide our efforts to accelerate research that improves survivability, strengthens operational readiness, and advances long-term health outcomes for Service members and the communities they serve.”
