Senior Nurse Scientist at Madigan Army Medical Center and Geneva’s 2018 Researcher of the Year MAJ (Ret.) Mary McCarthy, PhD was honored as guest speaker for Geneva’s Join the Conversation event on 13 November. Her presentation, addressed to community members and military medical leaders, focused on the impact that her longstanding commitment to nursing research has had on our nation’s service members.
Geneva’s Board of Director Chair Major General (Ret.) Frank Scoggins began the event with welcoming remarks followed by an overview of Geneva from President & Chief Executive Officer Elise Huszar, and Scientific Advisory Board Chair Dr. Neil Vining. Scientific Advisory Board member Dr. Eleanor Bond presented Dr. McCarthy with the 2018 Researcher of the Year award. The award honors an individual who, in partnership with Geneva, spearheads innovative medical research within the U.S. military for the benefit of service members and veterans, their families, and the global community.
Since 1996, Dr. McCarthy has been an instrumental partner to the sustainment of Geneva’s mission. Over the years, Dr. McCarthy and her team of subject matter experts at Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Joint Base San Antonio have continued educating warfighters about proper nutrition and disease prevention. Her studies, focusing on health promotion, nutrition, and genomics related to mitigating risk for metabolic syndrome and vitamin D deficiency, have resulted in ensuring military readiness and deployability. Her research promotes the overall wellness of service members, addressing critical gaps in the understanding of links between key nutrients, harmful dietary substrates, and the impact on disease risk.
